Indoor Adventure at The Boulder Yard

Mac Kid Review

By Amy Ghiglieri, Publisher April 20, 2019

What if I told you there’s a place in Frederick where your kids are actually encouraged to climb the walls? A few weeks ago, on a day off from school my friend and I were trying to think where to take our kiddos for a fun day. We each have three kids, pretty much the same in age, and it’s always a struggle to find something that appeals to both the oldest (third grade) and the youngest (3 years old) ones.

When my friend suggested climbing at The Boulder Yard, it sounded like the perfect plan. Everyone over the age of five can climb and there’s childcare, the Kids Cave, for those under the age of five. Sweet!

Upon arriving at The Boulder Yard, we signed a waiver, received a safety overview, put on some climbing shoes and headed out to test our strength and agility. We all quickly learned that rock climbing is more than just pure mental strength. It also requires a lot of mental strength as you have to determine your climbing route by thinking ahead and envisioning your route and footwork.

At The Boulder Yard, you can purchase a day pass and stay for as long as you like or they have monthly individual and family membership options. We ended up staying for a couple hours and the kids were exhausted afterwards. The good kind of exhausted where mom gets a quiet ride home!

As the mom, I loved watching my kids trying to push themselves further with each climb. The change in their abilities in even just the first hour was incredible and I could see their confidence growing. The staff was so encouraging and helpful in teaching my kids the skills they needed to climb higher. I had so much fun getting to play with my kids in a way that was a workout for me as well!

The under five crowd in our group had a fun time in the childcare area and it was nice to be able to focus on the older kids, which can often be hard when the littlest are so attention demanding.

In addition to rock climbing, The Boulder Yard also offers yoga, group fitness, karate, and open gym time on their fitness equipment. You can drop in during normal business hours, without a reservation, but reservations are required for the Kids Cave.

I was provided with admission and/or compensation in exchange for my review. As always, opinions are 100% my own.
