Five Frederick Breakfast Spots We Love

By by Nichole Dowlearn April 25, 2019

My kids and my husband love to go out to breakfast in Frederick on a weekend morning. I can't say I often tell them no.

After all, what’s not to love about breakfast? No matter what kind of breakfast you’re in the mood for -- the sweet or the savory -- you can find it in Frederick, MD.

Plus … breakfast has bacon!

And don’t even get me started on Bloody Marys!

Hungry for breakfast in Frederick yet?

I am! So I've rounded up my family's choices for the top five breakfast spots in the Frederick, MD area, along with the reasons that my family loves them. I've listed them in alphabetical order:

Beans In the Belfry

122 W Potomac St, Brunswick, MD 21716; (301) 834-7178

Hours:

Breakfast all day Mon-Thurs 8-9pm, Saturday 8am-10pm

Jazz Brunch on Sundays 11am-2pm

What we love:

Cozy and family owned, Beans in the Belfry is a local jewel hidden in a restored 1910 historic church! hey have toys, kids books, and things for kids to do while I enjoy a cup of coffee and a moment of uninterrupted conversation. I always get the breakfast croissant sandwich because--bacon.  But the kids love to pick baked goodies from the case (pies, cakes, cannoli, and Krispy treats with rainbow marshmallows--just to name a few). They even have special Kidz Kreamz (shakes), smoothies, and hot chocolate.  My favorite time to visit though is on Sundays!  I can sip mimosas and listen to live jazz while nibbling fresh fruit and quiche or eggs benedict and admire the light that shines in through the big stained glass windows.  Heavenly!

Family Meal

 882 N East St, Frederick, MD 21701; (301) 378-2895

Hours:

Breakfast Mon- Sun 7am-11am

Brunch Sat-Sun 7am-11am

What we love:

So "no duh,"  Family Meal is probably one of the best "brekky's" in Frederick. The remodeled car lot outside and upscale Art Deco decor and style gives it a retro modern vibe that is hipster and vintage at the same time. When my little ones choose from the "Happy Campers" section of the menu they often indulge in the hotcakes and bacon.  They are giggling and covered in goo in no time.   I usually waffle between the biscuits and gravy and the breakfast sandwich (so I can have duck fat fries).  Or sometimes I just have a waffle. The service is fantastic they are accommodating and warm. Even when a kiddo is climbing under the table or covered in ketchup--almost like family.  Hmmm...

Frederick Coffee Co

100 N East St, Frederick, MD 21701; (301) 698-0039

Hours:

They serve breakfast all day

Mon-Thurs 6am-9:30pm

Fri-Sat 6am-10pm

Sunday 7am-8pm

What we love:

This locale favorite corner coffee shop is always crowded.  And there is a reason! The food and drinks are delicious. I highly recommend the Oinkin' Rooster Bagel (sausage, egg, Swiss, honey mustard on an everything bagel) besides being a surprisingly good combination, it is just super fun to say. The Kids like Ken's French Toast (cinnamon bread with syrup and powdered sugar) and the Irish Oatmeal with berries. My husband (who can at times be a bit of a coffee snob) actually enjoys their brew. The baristas are friendly and efficient. Frederick Coffee Co is especially great for a quick First Saturday bite before visiting the shops on Shab Row or Market St.

Mountain Gate Family Restaurant

133 Frederick Rd, Thurmont, MD 21788; (301) 271-4373

Hours:

They serve breakfast all day

The breakfast Buffet is everyday from 6am-11am

Mon-Sun 6am-10pm

What we love:

What's the perfect restaurant for a 10 year old who eats everything in sight and a three year old who won't eat anything? A buffet baby!  This Normandy-style-meets-the-70s eatery is eclectic and comfortable. The food is from scratch and warm--savory and sweet.  It's as if you went to Grammy's and she made all the things and is just keeping them warm for you--including 9 different kinds of pie. The best part? The buffet at Mountain Gate Family Restaurant is under $10/per person (before tax).  How's that for family friendly?

Cafe Nola

4 E Patrick St, Frederick, MD 21701;  (301) 694-6652

Hours:

Opens 7am Mon-Fri

Opens 9am Sat-Sun

What we love:

Bring this Mama Bear a mimosa, bring Papa Bear a (tomato/basil-infused vodka) Bloody Mary, and the baby bears French toast covered in season compote and you've got the makings for some tasty family memories!  Cafe Nola  uses local and organic ingredients whenever possible so you can feel good about what you're giving your little ones. They also have gluten free and vegetarian options so when I'm feeling healthy and fresh, and want a tofu quinoa scramble, this is the select spot. When I'm not, their biscuits and gravy go down...well, like gravy. My husband likes the Titan Tot (a tator tot filled with bacon and gouda with Cholula sauce and jalapenos). This is the kind of place you get a pretty design made with milk in your latte, you might wear that new sundress on the patio, and try to get your kid to keep a napkin on his lap. He probably won't and they really won't care.

Hungry yet? Me too. Time for breakfast.
