A few weeks ago we received a whopper of an electric bill. I mean a BIG one. After doing a bunch of research, I decided this winter we would simply turn down the thermostat and remember to turn off any and all lights we were not using. Well, I could only sit in the dark and freeze for a few days before I had to turn the lights back on and thermostat back up. I then began looking for other ways to reduce our electric bill.
Our electric supplier is Potomac Edison so I checked out their website to see if they were offering any programs or incentives to help with weather proofing supplies. On their site I found out about the EMPOWER Maryland Energy Efficiency Act. Apparently Maryland has a goal of reducing the state's energy consumption by 15% by 2015. The cost for this program is paid by a surcharge in everyone's monthly electric bill regardless of who your supplier is. One of the benefits of the program is that you can schedule a free quick home energy audit and the auditor will install up to $75 worth of energy-saving products - compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), low-flow shower heads, etc. Am I the only person who did not know about this?
I scheduled our audit and within a few days Kyle Heister from Comfortable Home Energy Audits came out to my house. Within thirty minutes Kyle showed us some quick ways to reduce heat loss and we received twelve CFLs and two-low flow showerheads. What a deal! Kyle was super informative, speedy, polite, and he answered all of my questions (and more) thoroughly. Best of all it did not cost me an extra dime.
